BURHAN NIHAD JARRAR

Born in Maithaloun, Jenin area, on 29 Dec. 1946; also known by his nickname Rashad Al-Kasser; was a student activist, founding, among other things, a political group which participated in the demonstrations of 1963; graduated from high school in 1965, then joined the Khadouri Agricultural Institute in Tulkarem for two years but could not complete his studies due to the 1967 War; member of Fateh; undertook military training in Algeria and Egypt and became a military trainer for Palestinian groups; was deputy leader of the Fateh armed forces in the Golan Heights in 1971 and in Algeria in 1972; became commander of the Fateh Marine forces in Latakia in 1973; went to Russia in 1974 to pursue his MA in Mechanical Engineering (focusing on Industrial Productions) at the People’s Friendship University of Russia, Moscow, graduating in 1980; was an active member of the Palestine Student Union during his time in the USSR; after graduating, moved to Lebanon and served in senior PLA positions in Lebanon (1980) and Syria (1984); pNC member since 1984; was in charge of the organization and administration commission of the PLA forces in Jordan in 1986; elected member of the Fateh Revolutionary Council in 1989; was acting head of the Force 17 elite unit in 1992; returned to Palestine after the Oslo Accords and became Brigadier General in the PA security forces in 1995 until being elected PLC member (Fateh) for the Jenin constituency in the Jan. 1996 elections; served as member of the PLC Monitoring and Human Rights Committee from 1996-2004 and of the Interior, Security and Local Governance Committee from 1996-2003; is elected member of the Advisory Council of Al-Quds Open University’s since the late 1990s; was a member of the PLC’s Education and Social Issues Committee from 2004-06; ran unsuccessfully in the 2006 PLC elections (Fateh, Jenin district).
