Born in Jerusalem in 1871 to a Christian family; received his elementary and high school education in the Greek and Russian schools in Jerusalem; went to Russia in 1891 to study Theology; in 1895 specialized in Islamic Studies at the Kazan Academy, graduating in 1899; returned to Palestine, then moved back to Russia; became head of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Baku State University in 1920; Director of the Arabic Language section in the Azerbaijan Academy of Science from 1930-33; lectured on the history of Arab-Islamic thought; was fluent in Syrian, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, French, German, and Russian; wrote a number of articles in magazines (e.g., Al-Muqtatef, Al-Hilal and Al-Athar) as well as books related to Russian language and culture for Arabic speakers, as well as to Arab-Islamic history and philosophy, most notably, Islamic Intellectual History (Arabic, 1928); died in Baku, Russia, in 1942.
