ABDUL KARIM (ABU SALMA) Al-KARMI

Birth: 1/1/1907 Death:1/1/1980
Born in the area of Bani Saab, Tulkarem, in 1907; studied Law in Syria, receiving a BA from Damascus University in 1927; studied also at the Palestinian Law School in Jerusalem; worked as a teacher at Al-Omari and Rashidiyyeh Schools in Jerusalem, where he became close to the poet Ibrahim Tuqan; then opened a law firm in Haifa until 1948; moved briefly to Akka, then was displaced to Damascus where he practiced law and worked as teacher of Arabic Language and as inspector of literary programs in the Damascus Radio; was awarded the Lotus Prize for Literature by the Union of Asian and African Writers in 1978; served as Dir.-Gen. of the Union of Palestinian Writers and Journalists in 1980; known for his critical nationalistic revolutionary poems; published a number of poems, stories and plays and especially remembered for his poems We Shall Return, and I Love You More; was given the title of The Olive of Palestine; died in 1980.
